Lining up ready to hit the ball, I was scorching hot! What a day for cricket!!

This morning Tim Richards from Manawatu Cricket came to teach us some skills about cricket.  First we did some relays to get warmed up!  Next we threw a cricket ball up in the air then caught it in a cup before bringing it to our chest.  We tried to clap while the ball was in the air then catch it before it drops to the ground.  We continued  with this by trying to add another clap each time.

It was then time for batting!  It is important to use the flat side of the bat, get your body sideways, keep your writing hand closest to the bottom of the handle, take a step to transfer your power to the ball, and keep your eye on the ball.

Lastly, we used the skills that we learnt to play non-stop cricket!

We want to play cricket next year!

We Rock 'n' Roll at School

In the Dream Team every morning for 3 minutes we have been learning Rock 'n' Roll. We are in our beginning phase of learning.  So far we have learnt the basic step.  Without learning we won't be able to do any stylish moves.  Today was the first day that we practised our step with a partner.  We can't wait to learn more!

This week we have been learning to make step by step instructions

Look at what Michael did at home to present his instructions for how to make a burger.

We love how many details and tips he gave!

What an excellent job Michael. Yum, I bet everyone feels like burgers now.

What Tui has to say about Reading Theory:

  • It encourages me to read at night every night
  • It is really fun
  • I learn lots of different types of stuff like about underwater, butterflies and nature and heaps more topics. I love them!
  • When you read them and find tricky words I like putting the words in my spelling book to practise
  • The questions are really challenging because sometimes I have to go back and forth to the passage
  • I have to read the questions carefully
  • It is fun to move up the levels
  • The levels are challenging for me. Once I go along them they get harder for me. I haven't gone down the levels yet and I am not going to!!!
  • Kate, Lydia and I always talk about Reading Theory

Thank you Tui for your reflective comments about our new reading site.

Bean Bag Challenge

We needed to think:
-how high to throw the beanbag
-about more than ourselves!
-how we have our hands ready to catch
-about what type of throw would be best for the task
-about timing (once the middle person has released the first bean bag, throw yours to them straight away)

We needed to communicate:
-perhaps count them in
-ideas of how to throw, stand, distance, catch
-planning and making decisions first
-helping each other, encouraging

We needed to use our movement skills:
-arrange your body ready to catch (move your arms, hips to the side)
-quick hands
-twist/swing movement

Quarter Finals down, Semifinals here we come!

Beep, beep beep! I panicked, was I late for school?! Phew, it was  Sunday. The big day ... the day the All Blacks played France in the RWC quarter finals. I kicked my sheets off me and jumped out of bed.
Running down the hallway like I was running on the field, I was ready to support my country.

Let's see whose writing will be published on the blog to finish our story...

(Mikaela's) Rushing into mum and dad's room to wake them up, I yelled right in dad's ear "Rugby World Cup!". (Tui's) Switching on the tv with extreme excitement, I waited for the whistle to blow. Ding, ding! (Riya's) My heart was beating until the All Blacks scored a try.  "Ohhh yeahh!!" we got a penalty. After a few minutes France scored one too. France got a yellow card for punching Richie in the face (fist to face).
(Cruze's)It was funny because my granddad was yelling at the tv.

Today was the Book Fair. Today we celebrated the importance of reading and our love for books by dressing up as a book character.
We also went to the Book Fair in the library to pick books that we wish to purchase.
What an exciting day!

We had our second session working on our Wearable Arts.

Kelly is very impressed with the way we are using our initiative and problem solving before asking for help.

Some of us have realised that our plans are quite detailed enough. We then have had to go back to sketching and looking for better ideas.
We have decided that we need a break we are allow to have a quick run around the field. This worked well this afternoon to help us keep our brains going and to give us a break from all our hard work.

Tuesday, 25 August 2015

Our sketches and planning is already paying off.
Today we started by setting a goal to achieve for the afternoon. We also had to write steps to achieve that goal.
Take a look at what we got up to today for Wearable Arts:

We loved having parents helping us. It is nice to discuss our ideas with others and provide an extra hand or two.
We can't wait to do Day TWO tomorrow.

Dean taught us our dance. We will do this dance while a Poutama class presents their Wearable Arts.

I am proud of you all

Dear Dream Team children

Today during literacy I took some quick snap shots of you all working. I did this because I am so proud of how hard you have been working.
I saw EVERYONE on task and focused on your learning.
You are developing such amazing attitudes towards ALL areas of learning.

Thank you for being a 'dream team'

Writing prompts

WALT write creatively using your imagination.  Aim to achieve your individual writing goal this week.

Writing Prompt 1: You are the giraffe, what has scared you so badly that you literally climbed a tree? Remember to include the setting, feeling words, and dialog in your story.

Writing Prompt 2: Write what events happened before this picture. Was there an argument or was it a trick? Describe using exciting adjectives, adverbs and verbs what happened!

Writing Prompt 3: Explain how this happened or explain what the world would be like if this happened in everyone's home)

A snapshot of Monday's learning

On Monday Mel was teaching in our class while Kelly was teaching in another class for the day.

4th August, 2015

Dear parents/ caregivers,

The Dream Team have made a decision. A very important decision! After a very intense vote we came up with a Wearable Arts theme.

The theme is…..Screen Shot 2015-07-31 at 12.31.12 pm.png

We have done some initial thinking. Here are some of our ideas:
  • clouds
  • a bed
  • angel
  • pillows
  • a horrible awakening alarm clock
  • dream catchers
  • a flying squid
  • a superhero
  • bad dreams: haunted house
  • jobs which we dream of having in the future i.e. a crazy Scientist, Cricket player, inventor

If you can help us in anyway please email Kelly. kellyc@russellst.school.nz
We are thinking of having a few big days of creating which we will invite as many helpers to school as we can.

Let’s get creative!
